They include upgrades to the electronics, giving the traction control lean angle data so it can adapt accordingly. The small screen is also part of the package, as are the wide footpegs taken straight from the R GS Adventure model. The centre-stand has been removed. In addition to the lean-angle-sensitive traction control, you also gain more ability to control individual settings within rider modes, including throttle response, traction control and AB. The GS is a bike that never fails to impress me. Despite the constant onslaught of new, very good machines, it always seems to holds its own. Let me explain.

So we took the chance to offer the GS in a range that is more diverse and interesting. The most obvious example of this approach is the Rallye, which has been designed as the most off-road ready standard GS yet. The Rallye also comes with radiator guards to protect against stones, and cross-spoke wheels that can be fitted with knobbly rubber at no extra charge. Some adventure bike launches barely include off-road riding but BMW gave the Rallye a chance to show what it could do by choosing a route that was almost exclusively on dirt, with some deeper sand, serious ruts and hefty boulders along the way. Many bikes would have struggled but the GS lived up to its billing, getting everyone round with impressively few tip-overs and huge amount of entertainment. That big boxer engine, essentially unchanged apart from Euro 4 tweaks, and still putting out a max of bhp, was as useful an accomplice as ever. It grunted out its torque and found improbable amounts of grip on the loosest surfaces, with the assistance of the knobbly Metzeler Karoo III tyres and superbly refined traction control system.

It was the launch of the Rallye Sport that had lured me to Portugal, though the bike I was to be riding was beefed up with the optional metal engine bars and aluminium bash plate. My evening on the launch began after checking into our hotel in Vilamoura, when I came down to the bar area for a drink. While the other chaps on the launch checked out the intricate details of the bike, I stood and stared, my mouth gaping and drool running down my chin. The standard GS splits opinions when it comes to looks, with one school loving the brashness of it and the other calling it downright ugly, but the Rallye is a thing of beauty. A new colour scheme has been introduced and that, coupled with the minor, more off-road ready adjustments to the setup, has made this bike an absolute stunner. Our bikes were fitted with Karoo 3 tyres, though more road biased rubber is an option when you purchase. As we were going to be spending most of our time on the trails, they were most welcome, and performed great on the short road ride on tarmac to our first section of off-road.

So we took the chance to offer the GS in a range that is more diverse and interesting. The most obvious example of this approach is the Rallye, which has been designed as the most off-road ready production GS yet. Pavey runs 5-day off-road riding courses and riding holidays in the Algarve every year, and we were invited to get a taste of what the holidays are like with a one day experience, combined with the UK journalist press launch of the new RGS Rallye. Using the bhp liquid-cooled RGS as its base is a great place to start. A bike that you can happily cruise along at mph on Portuguese roads that appear to have been dropped from heaven, and then just turn left up a set of gnarly trails and pretend you are a Dakar riding God. We bumped into Husqvarna factory Dakar rider Ruben Faria out with his mate for a training ride on a full-factory Husqvarna rally bike, at the end of one of the trails we were riding. Anywhere and everywhere.
