The festival's sixteenth edition ended last Sunday and the country's biggest film fest broke new records, having sold almost , tickets and counting roughly 1, Romanian and international guests. The Romanian Days were, as usual, reliably exciting, with an army of national filmmakers storming the city for those days of the festival week. And they are indeed, as filmmakers, industry professionals and ticket-buyers flock to Cluj. The mostly sold-out venues and the lively discussion rounds after the screenings are proof that the industry is alive and kicking, despite the acute problem of financing cinema in this country. The Romanian Days include a mix of already released and new titles competing for the Romanian Days trophy. In an experiment to try to find out what is costs to plant potatoes and cabbage in the country's most prolific area for these crops, near Bucharest, Georgescu moved to the countryside and did just this. What he discovered about why agriculture is a failing business in Romania makes you want to hit your head against the back of the seat in front of you, a not illogical consequence of communism-indebted thinking, but just as infuriating.
The festival takes place in 20 locations around the city, including outdoor and unconventional places. Since the festival is also held in Sibiu. It is the year when Sibiu was declared European Capital of Culture. The competition is dedicated to first and second feature films. The intensive workshop gives teenagers the opportunity to cover all the steps of filmmaking under the supervision of film professionals and using modern equipment. After years of continuous work in promoting Romanian cinema and welcoming international guests to meet national productions and their filmmakers, in , the festival rounded up its industry activities under one umbrella. TIFF - Industry hosts a series of masterclasses, lining-up experts in audience development, and script writing, film directors, documentarist and personalities.
Official competition Competitive section focused on films that are illustrative of the new wave in international cinema. The competition is open to first and second feature films only and must be national premieres. What's Up, Doc? Non-competitive section presenting documentaries produced in the past two years, with a minimum duration of 60 minutes. Romanian Days Competitive section focused on Romanian short and feature films produced between and and on Romanian cinema retrospectives.
It will bring many surprises, including the promotional campaign and special guests.

Transylvania is one of those places that immediately evokes a very defined image, but perhaps not one that involves excellence in film. The Transilvania International Film Festival TIFF is in its 16th year now though and attracts a very fine set of films and corresponding following of cinephiles from around the world each year. It takes place in Cluj-Napoca, the second most populous city in Romania and the unofficial capital of the historical province of Transylvania, which I found bathed in sunlight as I arrived at the tail end of this year's festival. I hadn't had much of a chance to research the line-up beforehand, which turned out to be quite a beautiful thing, my days typically revolving around waking up early and eating a hearty breakfast before opening up the programme and thinking 'what shall I see today? I packed about five movies in a day and - maybe it was a state of mind thing, maybe it was a travelling alone thing - my viewing choices skewed toward the weird, TIFF, as it transpired, serving up a supremely and intriguingly fucked up selection of films.
Founded in , in the Romanian town of Cluj-Napoca, the Transilvania International Film Festival has quickly grown to become the most important film-related event in Romania and one of the most spectacular annual events in the region. A troubled relationship between a gay father and his daughter shows that lying is an ageless human trait. Pushing deeper for the truth and the emotion; the passionate blooming romance between two men in the Yorkshire countryside. Now playing:. All channels. All events.
