Beginning in Pont du Gard, Stage 17 of the Tour heads northeast, climbing its way toward the town of Gap at the foot of the high Alps. The stage should start fast, and since this could be the last chance for a non-GC rider to win from a breakaway, the competition to join the lead group will be fierce. The day opens gently but soon begins its long, slow ascent toward the Alps, with the Intermediate Sprint coming just before the road really starts to grind. This marks the approximate midway point and where the profile levels out, rolling its way across a plateau toward the final climb, the Category 3 Col de Sentinelle. The Sentinelle offers the perfect launchpad for a winning move. Buy Now.

Matteo Trentin Mitchelton-Scott claimed victory on stage 17 of the Tour de France after soloing clear of the break on the road to Gap, while Julian Alaphilippe Deceuninck-QuickStep retained the yellow jersey after a day of relative truce among the general classification contenders. On a day of two races within a race, Trentin rode to his third stage victory at the Tour he previously won in and after punching his way clear of the breakaway group ahead of the final climb of the Col de la Sentinelle. Alaphilippe and the podium contenders, meanwhile, rolled home more than 20 minutes behind, content to spare themselves for the rigours to come in the Alps over the next three days. Trentin was part of a strong break that amassed an unassailable lead over the peloton on yet another day of soaring temperatures, and he proved the strongest and savviest of their number when the move began to fragment in the final hour of racing. The Italian forced the initial split when he responded to Nils Politt's acceleration with a little over 30km to go. Now operating from a group of ten riders that also included Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet CCC and dangerman Kasper Asgreen Deceuninck-QuickStep , Trentin seized his opportunity when he attacked forcefully with 14km remaining, just before the category 3 haul up the Sentinelle. He began the ascent with a second buffer over the chasers, and he proceeded to extend that advantage to half a minute on the 5km ascent.

Following the example of double stage winner Simon Yates, the Italian escaped from a breakaway group to arrive solo in Gap, fending off the return of Danish prodigy Kasper Asgreen. For the third year in a row, after Peter Sagan in and Alexander Kristoff in , the A lot of luck will be needed. I suffered today but I guess it was the same for everyone. The temperature was very high. I feel good but I have to be exceptionally good tomorrow. There are 90 points up for grabs tomorrow,

This transition stage has 'breakaway' written all over it. With three race-deciding mountain stages just beyond it, the only concern for the GC leaders and their teams will be to reach Gap without suffering any mishaps and having expended as few resources as possible. Similarly, the sprinters are unlikely to instruct their teammates to chase down any escapees thanks to the presence of the third-category Col de la Sentinelle little more than a dozen kilometres from the finish. After playing cat and mouse with each other, the pair finished a few seconds ahead of a large chasing group mainly comprising GC riders, which highlights the difficulty of the Sentinelle as the final obstacle. If there is a ray of light for the sprinters, it comes from the fact that each of those stages came into Gap via the Col de Manse, a second-category ascent that is almost metres higher than the Sentinelle. The organisers' choice of the Sentinelle may be a consequence of the Manse's tendency to produce an unexpected twist in the GC battle. In , Joseba Beloki crashed out on the descent.
